FRIDAY FUNNY: Can You Dig It?

Las Vegas has always been known as a city of excitement and gigantic casino hotels. But in this current economic climate, the construction boom has gone bust. Nothing new is being built, and there has even been a serious debate over imploding the brand new, unused Harmon Tower in the City Center Complex.

So what’s happening to all of that expensive construction equipment sitting idle around the stagnant region? One creative company is putting it to good use.

Dig This® Las Vegas, the nation’s first heavy equipment playground, officially opened for business earlier this year. Just minutes from The Strip, Dig This gives non-industry folks the chance to experience the adrenaline rush of playing with massive, full-size Caterpillar® hydraulic excavators and bulldozers.

“Las Vegas is one of the most visited destinations in the Untied States; people come to Vegas to play, so it’s the perfect home for Dig This,” said Ed Mumm, Dig This founder and CEO. “I’m excited to bring the latest in recreational and corporate entertainment to Vegas.”

Dig This’ inspiration came to New Zealander Mumm, while he was operating heavy equipment to construct his home in Steamboat Springs, CO. After having fun clearing trees and scrub oak, constructing a road, building a pond, and digging foundations, he realized the potential for a business opportunity and the concept for Dig This was born.

In December 2007, Mumm opened his first heavy equipment playground in Steamboat Springs, CO. “After perfecting our business model in Steamboat Springs, we were ready for Vegas,” said Chad James, Dig This Vice President. “We found out that throttling up a powerful engine and sculpting mounds of earth is very empowering, and guests were willing to travel to a remote town in Northwest Colorado specifically to do so. Our new venture in Vegas provides us with a larger and more accessible location—the possibilities are endless.”

After an equipment and safety orientation, participants get behind the controls in climate-controlled, radio monitored cabs and maneuver equipment in individual work areas. Dig This Las Vegas offers corporate team building programs; special “Mega Day” events, an Excavate and Exfoliate Spa Package, and is available for private and special events. Dig This Las Vegas also features retail sales of licensed Caterpillar CAT merchandise including: apparel, hats, accessories, toys, and collectibles.
