Parking Projects Recognized By IPI

The International Parking Institute (IPI) has recognized 12 parking facilities and operations with its 29th annual Awards of Excellence, noting common threads of innovation, efficiency, eco- and user-friendliness, cost savings and collaboration among its winners.

Award winners competition represent a variety of facility types and sizes. Award categories included: architectural achievement; best design of parking facilities with less than and more than 800 spaces; innovation in programs and operations; and rehabilitation/restoration. Winners were selected by a panel of judges representing architects, parking corporations, and city, airport, and university officials.

“Our 2011 winners serve as models for overcoming the myriad challenges facing the parking industry today, including overtaxed and outdated systems, increased use, and limited funding and resources,” said IPI Executive Director Shawn Conrad, CAE. “Whether they have rehabilitated aging facilities or addressed parking issues with innovative alternatives, these projects all have advanced the industry and improved the future of their communities.”

Rather than demolish the 40-year-old Market Street Parking Structure, the City of York General Authority embarked on a major renovation – one that involved functional, structural and waterproofing design elements; a new building façade; and mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades. The $4.1 million project breathed new life into the facility, which housed 2,500 square feet of retail in addition to providing parking for 450 vehicles. In just 16 months, the team accomplished concrete repairs to shore up floor surfaces, sealing and waterproofing of all parking surfaces, operational improvements to create a more user/vehicle-friendly facility and multiple aesthetic enhancements. Modifications to the original unused plaza area along Market Street created potential office/retail space for the city.
