Daktronics Shines Through Solar Scoreboards

Providing an innovative and environmentally friendly solution, Daktronics now offers a solar power option for scoreboards where electrical service is impractical. In certain cases, scoreboards fitted with solar panels are more cost effective than trenching power from remote power grids.

“Sherwood High School in Sandy Springs, MD saved $7,000,” said Paul Kurtenbach, sales manager in Baltimore, MD “They would have had to trench through two parking lots and a baseball field to get power to their sign.”

“Combining Daktronics blue with solar rays we’ve effectively produced a ‘green’ scoreboard for the first time in company history,” said Kurt Kaski, lead designer for the project. “A lot of people like the green factor. Since it’s a renewable energy source, they’re doing their part to help the environment.”

The solar power kit includes two 40 watt solar panels, a control box, and batteries. Kaski calls the system a “turn key product.” Upon installation, the scoreboard is ready for use with an operating time of 20 hours with full sun power, or 15 hours without sunshine. Although it takes five days to completely recharge a dead battery, the display still runs for 3.5 hours every day, ensuring reliable usage for consecutive game days.

The solar power option is available for a select number of baseball, football, soccer, and multisport scoreboards. Daktronics currently utilizes solar technology in Vanguard signs for roadside construction.
