Suggestions for National Boss Day (Oct. 16)

Workplace advice, courtesy of Aubrey Daniels:

Sending positive reinforcement up the ladder can help improve your boss’ performance and make your life at work better. “We’re trained to think positive reinforcement flows in one direction at work, from the top down,” Daniels says. “But the laws of human behavior are universal, and positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool to help employees build better bosses.”

Daniels suggests the following types of positive reinforcement:
1. Stay attuned to what positively reinforces your boss. You can change your boss’ behavior by focusing on these “reinforcers”.
2. Seize opportunities to deliver some reinforcement, whether your boss makes difficult or unpopular decisions, does things to improve the quality of work life or things to improve the economic health of the organization.
3. Encourage peers to do the same. Remember — those that are positively reinforced will reinforce others more often.
